The building where enslaved people were held still exists on Goree Iisland. Including the famous door of no return. It was built in 1776 by the Dutch -but was the last of several the first ones dating back to 1536 and were built by Portuguese. Conditions were awful with small cells full of people. Between 150 to 200 men, women and children waited up to 3 before transported on board ships. Escape was impossible as the iisland was surrounded by deep shark filled waters. At different times the I island was used by the Portuguese, English, Dutch and French.
