Clarkson's role in abolition, the moment he decided to dedicate his life to the cause of abolition whilst travelling between London and Cambridgeshire and Gerish's comments on Wilberforce and Clarkson: Wilberforce - "became the leader in the cause of abolition & to whom (as is frequently the case in matters of this kind) is ascribed much of the credit due in reality to Clarkson. His was the toil, the drudgery, the weariness of body & spirit - to Wilberforce came the honour & renown. But we are assembled here today to honour the Cambridge student to whom first & foremost is due the abolition of slavery under the British flag."
