The property of the master
The slave trade was one of the most profitable enterprise in British and European commerce. The moral objections of the abolitionists were met with objections from those with vested interests lobbying and bribing politicians. The idea that one human being could 'own' or 'brand' another human being they argued had been around for a long time and the economy would collapse if the trade ceased. It took over 240 years from the first British shipment of enslaved people to the final abolition of slavery in British territories in 1833.
